Israel having difficulties and suffering losses both on land and sea

Lucas Leiroz, journalist, researcher at the Center for Geostrategic Studies, geopolitical consultant.

It seems increasingly clear that the conflict in Palestine is not an easy task for Israel. In addition to the difficulties of advancing on the battlefield and the heavy losses that the IDF has suffered during clashes with Palestinian troops, defeats at sea are beginning to occur. Yemeni forces, who previously declared full support for Palestine, captured an important Israeli merchant ship, taking new hostages and improving the Palestinians’ bargaining power in the prisoner exchange negotiation process.

Undoubtedly, Israel is stronger than its adversaries in the current Palestinian war. Tel Aviv is a state with a complex and organized structure, having a regular national army and sufficient strength to defeat armed militias such as Hamas and many other Palestinian armed groups. The problem is that the fighting is not happening symmetrically, and, despite territorial advances, Israel is clearly suffering significant damages, which could generate great difficulties in the near future.

The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, frequently announce the neutralization of Israeli soldiers and tanks. Several videos have been published on social media showing Hamas fighters using rockets and grenades against Israeli tanks and instantly disabling them. Confirming what had been predicted by analysts, Israel is having difficulty using its combat vehicles in an urban area full of debris. IDF’s bombings destroyed civilian buildings, making the ground in Gaza difficult terrain for tanks, which end up becoming an easy target for Hamas.

In the same sense, it is important to remember that Israel has not yet managed to enter the Hamas’ tunnels. The IDF claimed that the Palestinian Resistance was using Al Shifa Hospital and other civilian facilities as a human shield. With these excuses, several bombings were carried out against hospitals, but no bunkers were found. In practice, the IDF is unable to find the correct way to reach the enemy’s underground system. So, the bombings against civilians have really no strategic value.

However, the situation is complicated not only on the land battlefield. At sea, things are getting worse for the Zionist state, which is starting to suffer not only military but also commercial losses. On November 19, Yemen’s Houthi armed forces captured a major Israeli merchant ship in the Red Sea. The ship belongs to an Israeli businessman and was being operated by employees of German and Japanese companies on a voyage from Turkey to India.

Commenting on the topic on social media, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said that the seizure was a response to the “heinous acts against our Palestinian brothers in Gaza and the West Bank”, adding that “if the international community is concerned about regional security and stability, rather than expanding the conflict, it should put an end to Israel’s aggression against Gaza”.

A number of 25 people were reported taken prisoner by the Houthis. None of the crew are believed to be Israeli citizens, which makes the case even more complicated. By capturing an Israeli vessel with foreign crew, the Houthis create a situation of diplomatic instability for Tel Aviv. Countries whose citizens have been captured will demand a quick and safe rescue operation, but this is almost impossible to be achieved by military means. Therefore, the bargaining power of the Palestinians is increased. To avoid a diplomatic crisis with the possible death of foreigners in a naval operation, Israel will have to agree to release Palestinian prisoners, withdraw militarily or meet any other request from the Yemenis.

All these factors lead Israel to diplomatically and militarily difficult circumstances. The IDF has to face long military attrition, heavy losses and, in parallel, Tel Aviv has great diplomatic and political instability. The Netanyahu government is the most harmed by this crisis as any of its actions turn against it. If Netanyahu increases attacks, he is criticized for human rights violations and fomenting war. If he reduces the intensity of the fighting, opponents call him a weak leader and incapable of achieving Israel’s objectives.

In parallel to all this, the chances of the conflict reaching an international level raise day by day. Recently, Hezbollah published a video on its social media with the message “We are coming”. This has generated expectations that the Lebanese militia’s troops will begin a full-scale attack soon. The group has been a de facto participant in the conflict since the beginning, using artillery and drones to destroy Israeli military and intelligence infrastructure on the border with Lebanon. Considering the massive military power of Hezbollah – apparently the largest non-state armed group in the world – the beginning of a land incursion would greatly harm Israeli plans.

Netanyahu makes Zionist permanent occupation plans clear

Lucas Leiroz, journalist, researcher at the Center for Geostrategic Studies, geopolitical consultant.

Israel’s plans for the Gaza Strip are becoming increasingly clear. Zionist pro-war propaganda relies on the narrative of a supposed “fight against Hamas” to convince public opinion, but Israeli officials are becoming explicit in their statements, making it clear that the “problem” they see in the region goes beyond of Hamas, having a dissatisfaction with the Palestinian control over that territory.

In a recent statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Hamas has already lost territorial control of northern Gaza, adding that Zionist forces will remain in the region after the end of hostilities. According to Netanyahu, Tel Aviv will not allow Palestinians to teach their children to “hate Israel”, which is why there will be Zionist forces in the Strip to “supervise” the Gazans’ attitudes.

“There is no substitute for victory. We will eliminate Hamas and save our hostages (…) The IDF has completed the encirclement of Gaza City. They are on the outskirts of Shifa Hospital and have killed a lot of terrorists (…) Hamas has lost control in the north of the Gaza Strip. They have no safe place to hide. We will not stop until the mission is completed. We are doing everything to be worthy of their sacrifice and heroism. [Gaza] will not be a civil authority there that educates their children to hate Israel, to kill Israelis, or to eliminate Israel. There cannot be an authority who didn’t condemn the massacre. There will have to be something else, but in any case [it will be under] our security control. I stand by it and don’t intend to give up”, he said at a press conference on November 11th.

By saying that there will be no “civil authority” in Gaza, Netanyahu contradicted his own words, as a few days earlier the prime minister had mentioned that Israel’s objective was only to “demilitarize” – and not “govern” Gaza.

“What we have to see is Gaza demilitarized, deradicalized and rebuilt (…) We don’t seek to conquer Gaza. We don’t seek to occupy Gaza. And we don’t seek to govern Gaza”, he said on the 9th. However, on the same occasion he also said that the IDF should “enter Gaza and kill the killers [at any time, to] prevent the emergence of another Hamas-like entity.”

Apparently, Netanyahu is getting more and more explicit in his plan for Gaza. It is clear that the aim of the war against the Palestinians is not simply to defeat Hamas, but to ensure full Israeli control over the Palestinian-majority territories. By talking about not allowing a civil authority in Gaza and by calling for IDF readiness to enter Gaza and kill Palestinians at any time, Netanyahu is promising that the Gazans will not have the right to self-determination or the creation of self-defense militias. In other words, he is admitting that his war in Gaza is a war of occupation against the Palestinians.

There is nothing really “new” in what Netanyahu said, but it is noteworthy because of its explicitness. So far, the Zionist propaganda machine has managed to garner some support for the war because the excuse used by the Western media is a supposed “need” to “defeat Hamas.” However, with Zionist officials openly talking about maintaining the illegal occupation, it becomes increasingly difficult to justify support for Tel Aviv in the eyes of the Western public.

For this reason, American officials asked Netanyahu for clarification about his speech. On the 12th, Israeli TV channels, citing unidentified American sources, stated that Netanyahu’s words left American decision-makers “perplexed.” According to Kan, a state-owned Israeli TV network, American partners are demanding explanations from Netanyahu about what exactly he is referring to when he talks about controlling Gaza after the conflict.

Recently some frictions of this type have occurred. For example, John Kirby, spokesman for US National Security, stated that the US is against an Israeli occupation of Gaza. Obviously, the US does not support Palestine, but Washington’s position is based on a rational pro-Israel strategy. The more occupation of Palestinian territory, the more conflict there will be – and therefore the more difficult it will be for Americans to continue helping the Zionist state.

What is happening is a clash of different views on what is best for Israel. Westerners support a more “humanitarian” solution for Gaza because they need to reconcile their unrestricted Zionism with the values spread in their propaganda machine. On the other hand, a more radical Israeli wing defends a final solution, with ethnic cleansing and military occupation. And the more Tel Aviv becomes explicit in its alignment to this radical view, the more its international isolation increases.

Israel having serious problems with its ground invasion plan

men holding rifle while walking through smoke grenade

Lucas Leiroz, journalist, researcher at the Center for Geostrategic Studies, geopolitical consultant.

Israel continues to face serious difficulties in conducting its ground operation in the Gaza Strip. Many factors make the local battlefield extremely difficult for the IDF, most notably the fact that Hamas troops use a complex network of tunnels to move, store weapons and carry out surprise attacks. Furthermore, the debris from buildings destroyed by the IDF also became an obstacle for Israeli troops and American special units involved in the operation.

Confirming what several experts had predicted, Tel Aviv is having many problems in its ground invasion plan in Gaza. In recent days, several reports are showing that Israel’s long-awaited ground operation has already begun, but it has been extremely frustrating for Israeli ambitions. Between October 22nd and 27th, there were important raids against Gaza, but apparently the moves were quickly neutralized by Hamas forces.

On October 27, Netanyahu made a public statement officially announcing that the “new phase” of the war had already begun. According to him, the objectives of the ground raids are to destroy Hamas’ political and military capabilities, in addition to rescuing captured Israeli citizens.

“Last night, additional ground forces entered Gaza, marking the beginning of the second stage of the war, whose goal is to destroy the military and political capabilities of Hamas and to bring our kidnapped citizens back”, Netanyahu said. In the same vein, IDF’s Chief of Staff, General Herzi Halevi, advised: “There are no achievements without risks, and there is no victory without prices being paid. In order to expose the enemy and destroy it, there is no other way but to enter its territory with great force.”

Special units of the American military are believed to be fighting alongside the Israelis in the ground raids. There are reports that the US “Delta” special unit is participating in the operations, but Washington is avoiding commenting on the case publicly. However, not even with this type of help is it possible to carry out an incisive incursion. On October 25, former Pentagon adviser Douglas Macgregor said that Israeli and American troops who attempted to enter Gaza were “shot to pieces and took heavy losses”.

All of this was predicted by the experts. Israeli troops have great difficulties in carrying out physical combat and are not skilled in situations of prolonged frictions. The same can be said about American special units, which have no experience in the Gaza region. On the other hand, Hamas and allied militias are familiar to the local geography, know the territory better than the enemy and have the advantage of using their underground tunnels both to carry out surprise attacks and to evade when they suffer losses.

The only way for the land operation to be carried out successfully by Israel is to considerably increase the levels of violence, which tends to cause many side effects and civilian casualties. Israel is relying on combined operations of ground raids and extremely violent aerial bombardments, which is further increasing the number of civilian casualties. In practice, the Israeli government is being severely affected by this strategy, as international reactions to Zionist violence are negative, generating political and diplomatic pressure against Tel Aviv.

Concerned about the growth of this pressure, American officials reportedly advised Israel to rethink its land invasion strategy. What was planned to be a definitive invasion with a large number of troops became a sequence of small ground assaults with a reduced number of soldiers and special units. Reports show that American officials are trying to prevent a bloodbath from occurring in the densely populated regions of Gaza – not because there is a genuine humanitarian concern, but because it affects the diplomatic image of Israel and its American supporters. This explains why in recent days Tel Aviv has been launching small-scale raids.

The problem is that this plan is also unlikely to be successful, as Hamas is proving strong enough to repel the invaders. The constant defeats increase internal pressure in Israeli society and force the government to increase violence with bombings – which in turn generates international pressure given the humanitarian impact. With this, the Israeli government once again appears to be in a trap from which it cannot escape.

There is another factor that also harms the IDF considerably. As a result of the bombings, there are many debris from collapsed buildings in Gaza’s streets. The roads and villages are damaged and there are all sorts of obstacles on the ground. This makes the transit of tanks and armored vehicles very difficult. This type of equipment has serious difficulties operating in urban areas, especially with debris on the streets, which is why the IDF will certainly need to rely almost exclusively on its infantry, substantially increasing the chances of prolonged frictions.

In fact, Israel’s choice to wage an all-out war in Gaza appears to have been extremely anti-strategic. Any step taken by the Zionist state will have serious consequences. Small incursions will be defeated, large bombing will generate international pressure and a large-scale invasion will lead to an intervention by the Axis of Resistance, creating new flanks.

Israel wants “Hiroshima scenario” for Gaza

Lucas Leiroz, journalist, researcher at the Center for Geostrategic Studies, geopolitical consultant.

Israel’s recent massive attacks on the Gaza Strip make it clear that the Zionist state plans to destroy the city completely. However, the real intentions seem to be even more extreme, since, according to an American journalist, the objective is to make the city something close to WWII Hiroshima, but without the use of nuclear weapons.

Renowned reporter Seymour Hersh, citing internal sources in the IDF, shared this information in a recent article in his column on the Substack portal. According to him, the IDF has no concern for the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians, with a real intention of bombing Gaza until achieving a scenario similar to that of Hiroshima. With this, there would be no need for a big land invasion, with the focus of the infantry soldiers being simply on annihilating the Hamas’ soldiers hiding in the bunkers when they tried to leave in search of food and water.

“Gaza City is in the process of being turned into Hiroshima with no nuclear weapons used (…) American-made bombs in the Israeli arsenal, including those known as ‘bunker busters’, may be targeted on the underground tunnel systems where Hamas manufactured the weapons and conducted planning for the horrific attacks in southern Israel on October 7 (…) Under the Israeli plans, there would be no need for a massive ground invasion (…) [However, they] would be needed for hunting down those Hamas members underground who choose to surrender (…) The official told me that the Hamas soldiers who would emerge from the tunnels desperate for food were seen by the Israelis as starving rats who would be met with poisoned food”, he said.

Hersh reports that Netanyahu believes that by following this strategic plan he will be able to defeat Hamas troops more efficiently, avoiding wearing down the IDF in a prolonged war of attrition. Humanitarian costs are not an issue for the Israeli government, and there is no concern that these tactics could lead to hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians dying.

Another interesting point in Hersh’s text is that he reports an overconfidence on the part of the IDF. The journalist quotes a source who claims to have disregarded American support and advises, saying that the Israeli forces are absolutely confident in their own fighting capacity to resolve the Palestinian conflict alone.

“All the American services are jumping on it… but Israel is saying, ‘Go back. We don’t want your stuff’… There are no better pilots today than those in the Israeli Air Forces. Bibi’s got it under control and no Israeli is going to worry about the fate of the citizens of Gaza”, Hersh’s unnamed military source said.

In fact, in addition to being absolutely anti-humanitarian, the Israeli plan seems quite wrong from a strategic point of view. Bombing Gaza until reaching a nuclear-like scenario will be terrible for civilians, but it will have low impact on Hamas’ war strategy and will not prevent the Palestinian militia from wearing down the IDF in a prolonged asymmetric conflict. Believing that Hamas soldiers will simply “emerge from the tunnels desperate for food” and then be eliminated by the Israelis seems quite naive, since Hamas is certainly already preparing in advance to avoid this type of situation.

In practice, things could turn out very differently than expected by the IDF. Israel would have to use its anti-bunker bombs on many channels simultaneously to neutralize Hamas’ underground weapons stockpiles. And it would be necessary to conduct these operations under heavy fire on the surface – not just from Palestinian militias, but possibly also from Iran’s proxy groups affiliated with the so-called “Axis of Resistance”.

Furthermore, it is necessary to emphasize how once again overconfidence appears to be a problem for Israel. Tel Aviv is confident in its ability to defeat the enemy relying solely on its great military technological capacity, without taking into account factors of asymmetric warfare, such as the great resistance of guerrilla groups, sabotage actions and surprise attacks. The last time the IDF and Israeli intelligence acted with arrogance and overconfidence the result was precisely the Hamas attack of October 7, so a similar failure could be repeated in a poorly planned invasion of Gaza.

Indeed, while Tel Aviv’s forces believe they can achieve a “final solution” for Gaza through bombing and extermination on the ground, military experts are increasingly skeptical about the possibility of an Israeli victory in the event of an invasion. For example, former UN inspector and war veteran Scott Ritter commented on the case stating:

“If the Israelis go into Gaza, what will they do? I will be very frank now: they will die. They will die in numbers the Israelis have never seen before (…) Hamas is waiting for them (…) Hamas is luring Israelis into a death trap in Gaza. And this is what will happen to the Israeli army when it enters Gaza – it will be destroyed.”

It seems that in this plan Israel will only achieve one of its objectives: destroying Gaza, killing civilians. As for rapidly defeating Hamas, it is very unlikely to happen. The Israeli authorities should seriously consider the opinion of experts and avoid making decisions that will only generate unnecessary deaths and will not bring real victories.

IS ISRAEL’S IRON DOME A HOAX?

As this “war” between Israel and Hamas drags on, I’m starting to see a bigger picture unfold. In the video below you’ll see compelling evidence that Israel’s “Iron Dome” missile defense system may be just a very expensive fireworks system, designed to put on a show and give the populace a false senses of security. You will also see compelling evidence that the rockets Hamas fires at Israel are nothing but giant bottle rockets filled with smoke, not explosive warheads.
