Circumcision is nothing, obedience and love are everything. Those are the words I heard when I was in prayer regarding the laws of Moses and the old covenant vs the law of Christ and the new covenant. This is a struggle I’ve been dealing with for awhile now as it always seems to come up, especially lately. In a world that often equates faith with personal fulfillment or religious routine, the words of Jesus stand in sharp contrast. Many are taught that loving Christ means “living your best life,” attending church regularly, or possessing biblical knowledge. While these things are not wrong in themselves, they do not define what it means to truly love Jesus.
Jesus makes His standard unmistakably clear: “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). Love for Christ is inseparable from obedience. It is not merely a feeling or a verbal confession, but a life shaped by submission to His will. Genuine love expresses itself in action—choosing faithfulness to Christ even when it is costly or countercultural.
Some object that emphasizing obedience promotes legalism, claiming that Christians are free from all law. Scripture teaches otherwise. Believers are no longer under the Mosaic ceremonial and civil laws fulfilled in Christ, yet God’s moral law remains. We are not saved by obedience, but grace never grants permission to sin. If obedience itself were legalism, then sins such as lying, theft, adultery, or taking God’s name in vain would no longer matter. The New Testament makes clear that we are freed from the law’s condemnation, not from righteous living.
Obedience, then, is not an attempt to earn God’s favor, but the natural response of a heart transformed by grace. When we grasp the depth of Christ’s sacrifice, our desire to obey Him grows. His love reshapes our character, our priorities, and our daily decisions, producing visible fruit in our lives.
A gospel that emphasizes comfort, knowledge, or religious activity while minimizing obedience risks distortion. Church attendance and Scripture memorization cannot replace a heart fully surrendered to Christ. To follow Jesus is to walk in obedience to His commands, allowing His love to govern every part of our lives. Obedience is love in action.
I couldn’t agree more. We are saved by grace through faith in Christ but we are still called to live holy lives, even if we’re not subject to the Mosaic ceremonial and civil laws. The 10 commandments still apply and in fact Jesus added to them during the sermon on the mount (Matthew chapters 5-7) so you may want to study those. 1 Peter 1: 14-16 put it this way: …14As obedient children, do not conform to the passions of your former ignorance. 15But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, 16for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”…
The only way to be holy is to be saved by Jesus Christ, to be covered by His blood. Only then will God not see our wretched condition, He will see Jesus’ sacrifice for us instead! Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Hebrews 9:22
REPENT AND SEEK JESUS CHRIST NOW while He can still be found. Once He returns it will be too late!
