Synergistic Effects of DMSO and Clove Oil for Dental Pain Relief
Since I recently underwent a tooth extraction (and pain from the tooth before that) I have been using my own blend of DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide), clove oil and some distilled water. I learned about this by researching DMSO and dental pain and what I found has really helped! Clove oil is a known pain reliever for dental pain but the DMSO enhances it’s effects!
DMSO enhances the effect of clove oil by helping it to increase skin permeability allowing the clove oil pain relief properties (especially Eugenol) to penetrate deeper into skin tissues. Here is a more detailed explanation I found through internet searching.
- Enhanced Absorption: DMSO is known for its unique capacity to carry other substances through the skin and into underlying tissues. When combined with clove oil or dried cloves, DMSO helps deliver eugenol more effectively to the site of pain, such as muscles, nerves, or inflamed areas.
- Synergistic Analgesic Action: Cloves have natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties due to eugenol. DMSO itself can block pain signals by slowing or inhibiting conduction in C-type nerve fibers, which transmit pain sensations. This dual mechanism—targeted delivery of eugenol + direct nerve blockade by DMSO—creates a more potent pain-relieving effect than either component alone.
- Clinical Support: A randomized placebo-controlled trial using a topical solution with DMSO (15%) and plant terpenes (including eugenol from clove oil) showed 78.1% of patients experienced an 85% or greater reduction in pain within 10 days, demonstrating the therapeutic potential of this combination for conditions like plantar fasciitis.
As you can see there is a synergistic analgesic action when DMSO and clove oil are combined. I made my own version of this tincture based on information I found in this book on Amazon, I highly recommend it. Here is the recipe for my tooth pain tincture.
- 50 ML 99% Pure DMSO/Clove Mixture (This is what I use)
- 50 ML Distilled Water
- 10-12 Organic Cloves
I break open the cloves using a soup can for a roller and wax paper over them so they didn’t stick to anything. Just put them on some wax paper and fold it over the top of them. (You could also use a paper towel if you don’t have wax paper). Then break them open using the soup can. You don’t need to crush them completely, they just need to be broken open so the oil can be absorbed. Next mix the distilled water and DMSO together in a glass jar.
Next I put the broken up cloves into the distilled water and DMSO mixture. Once the cloves are in the mixture put it aside for at least 24-48 hours. I prefer longer (3 -5 days) but if you need a batch in a hurry 24 hours is sufficient. This allows the clove oil to combine with the DMSO. You could use clove oil and skip the soaking part but I don’t have a good recipe for using that, I don’t have the ratios. If you prefer to try that go ahead just do your research first.
Last but not least use some cheesecloth to strain the cloves out of the mixture. You will lose a little bit of liquid in the cheesecloth but not much. Then I put the strained DMSO/Clove tincture into a 100ml glass bottle with a dropper. You can get the ones I use by clicking here.
As for using it, the method is straightforward. I take 1 drop at a time on my finger and I rub it on the gum line around the affected area. It only takes 4-5 drops depending on your pain level but wow does it work well! I’ve been relying on that instead of the big pharma pills like Tylenol for my relief as I know what that stuff does to your liver and it’s horrible. My guts can’t take ibuprofen so DMSO and cloves it is!
I need to throw up some disclaimers here as well. For some folks DMSO can be very unpleasant. Here is the disclaimer. While effective, DMSO can cause side effects such as garlic-like breath, skin irritation, and potential interactions with other medications. Always use high-purity (pharmaceutical-grade) DMSO and consult a healthcare provider before use.
I have personally been told about the garlic breath (seems to go away fairly quick for most) and the skin irritation but I have not heard about the interactions with other medications. As always check with a healthcare professional if you’re on medication as DMSO will enhance its effect and in some cases that could lead to a bad outcome. Dimethyl sulfoxide is the full name of DMSO. It is an organosulfur compound with the chemical formula (CH₃)₂SO.
That’s it for now, I just wanted to share something that works for me and hopefully it could work for you as well. I know from the chat some of you are going through major dental issues like myself and I feel your pain, literally.
Blessings to you all.
Johnny
