The Federal Reserve’s digital payments system, which it promises will help speed up the way money moves around the world, will debut in July.
FedNow, as it will be known, will create “a leading-edge payments system that is resilient, adaptive, and accessible,” said Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin, who is the program’s executive sponsor.
The system will allow bill payments, money transfers such as paychecks and disbursements from the government, as well as a host of other consumer activities to move more rapidly and at lower cost, according to the program’s goals.
Participants will complete a training and certification process in early April, according to a Fed announcement.
“With the launch drawing near, we urge financial institutions and their industry partners to move full steam ahead with preparations to join the FedNow Service,” said Ken Montgomery, the program executive and first vice president at the Boston Fed, which helped spearhead the project under former Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren.
Institutions that participate in the program will have seven-day, 24-hour access, as opposed to a system currently in place that closes on weekends.
Program advocates say it will get money out to people much more quickly. For instance, they said, government payments like those issued in the early days of the Covid pandemic would have been credited to accounts immediately rather than the days it took to reach most people.

Rabbi Isser Zalman Weisberg, a rabbi at Machon Mishne Torah who is a follower of the Chabad branch of Hassidic Judaism, commented on the still uncertain outcome of the presidential election.

The rabbi began his video by citing media sources claiming that Joe Biden won the presidential election. Rabbi Weisberg emphasized that “nothing legally happened” since the media do not determine the winner of the election. The victor is officially certified by the Electoral College and then by the Senate, House of Representatives, and the National Archives. Representatives from each state’s electoral college meet in their respective state capitals on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December.
“This year, it falls on December 14, in the middle of Hannukah, a miraculous time for the Jews” Rabbi Weisberg said. “Then on January 6th, the Senate and the House assemble at one p.m. in a special session in the capital to declare the results.”

Amazon last week confirmed that it keeps transcripts of interactions with Alexa, even after users have deleted the voice recordings.
Based on reports that Amazon retains text records of what users ask Alexa, Sen. Chris Coons in May sent a letter to CEO Jeff Bezos, demanding answers.
The Democrat from Delaware asked Amazon to provide answers on how long it stores transcripts, whether users can delete them, why it collects them and how they are used, and whether the company anonymizes customer identity.
“While I am encouraged that Amazon allows users to delete audio recordings linked to their accounts,” Coons, a member of the judiciary committee, wrote in his letter, “I am very concerned by reports that suggest that text transcriptions of these audio records are preserved indefinitely on Amazon’s servers, and users are not given the option to delete these text transcripts.”
