The Romans Tried to Build a Third Temple for Israel in 363 AD
Julian the apostate attempted to rebuild the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem to challenge Christian beliefs and falsify the prophecy that “not one stone shall be left upon another” (Matthew 24:2). He ordered the project, funded it from the public treasury, and appointed Alypius of Antioch to oversee construction. Jews from across the empire flocked to Jerusalem, eager to restore their sacred site, and even women contributed their jewelry to the effort.
However, the project was abruptly halted by a series of catastrophic events. According to multiple historical accounts—particularly from Christian historians like Socrates Scholasticus, Sozomen, and Ammianus Marcellinus—a massive earthquake struck the site, shaking stones from deep beneath the foundation and destroying nearby buildings, killing many workers. Fire erupted from the excavated foundations, consuming tools and equipment, and some accounts describe luminous crosses appearing on the garments of the workers. These events were interpreted as divine intervention to prevent the rebuilding.
Julian died in battle against the Persians in June 363 CE, and with his death, the project was abandoned. The failure was widely seen as proof of the fulfillment of Christ’s prophecy. Modern scholars suggest the collapse may have been due to a natural earthquake, Jewish ambivalence, sabotage, or fire—but the dominant historical view at the time attributed it to divine action.
