Falsely labeled map circulates misinformation about Spokane Area Fires
This is why I’ve been very cautious about DEW speculation when it comes to these fires. The bottom line is we have a bunch of homeless in Spokane that are crazy and the guy who they arrested isn’t homeless, he’s just crazy. I’ve seen many reports on Spokane News (who gets info from his scanner) about crazy folks trying to start more fires, it’s absolutely insane!
We should’ve never gotten rid of the asylums. They weren’t perfect but it sure beats having the crazy out on the streets getting in our faces and setting fires, sometimes intentionally, sometimes by accident when cooking. You can say what you like about the asylums but what we’ve been doing since then is obviously not working.
Some of the maps that have been circulating and some of the video footage are FAKED. As someone who lives here I want to be accurate in reporting on these things. While the evacuated areas are close to where the data centers were proposed, those areas aren’t actually in the evacuation zone.
A map is spreading around Facebook suggesting that the addresses of supposed data centers are aligned with the ignition point of the Old Trails Fire.
A key issue with the map is that it labeled its addresses in the wrong place – neither location it lists was actually in an evacuation zone.
The map lists three addresses: 11703 W Medical Lake Hwy, 2425 E Magnesium Rd. and 2111 E Hawthorne Rd. and claims they are connected to data center plans. (Read NonStop Local’s most recent data center coverage here and here.)
The image suggests that 11703 W Medical Lake Hwy is near the Old Trails Road and Newkirk Road intersection, which is where the first level 3 evacuations took place.
11703 W Medical Lake Hwy is actually around eight miles southwest of that area. The real location is just south of the Spokane International Airport, near I-90 exit 280, which leads to Medical Lake Road.
The other addresses on the image are 2425 E Magnesium Rd and 2111 E Hawthorne Rd. The image suggests these addresses are near Lyons Avenue and just west of Division, an area placed under Level 3 evacuation orders by the Old Trails Fire.
In reality, 2425 E Magnesium Rd or 2111 E Hawthorne Rd are both east of Division and neither one was in an evacuation zone.
The two addresses sit closer to the north end of Crestline, sitting on Magnesium Road and Hawthorn Road, respectively.
The mislabeled map is not the only piece of misleading information on the internet regarding the destructive Spokane Fires. Fake, AI-generated images and videos pretending to show real aftermath and destruction from the fires circulated the internet in the last few days.
Detection tools can be used to identify AI-generated content, although they are not always completely accurate. Understanding the source of a piece of information can also help prevent the spread of information.
As I said above I won’t sensationalize anything going on here in Spokane. We know the biggest fire was set intentionally but the investigations into the others are ongoing. The only thing they know for sure at this point is that they were human caused, but it’s not known if those were intentional or not. After everything we’ve seen about wildfires and 15 minute cities I thought for sure these were set because of data centers. As it turns out that isn’t the case and I wanted to report it as soon as I found out about these fake maps and fake videos.
If new evidence shows itself and it proves to be credible then I will report on it. Until then I won’t fuel the fake news fire, no pun intended.
There are also fake news reports about the Spokane County Sheriff not allowing drones into the active fire zones because they’re hiding something. No, they can’t allow drones into the active fire fighting zones because of the helicopters and planes that are dropping water on them. They have to be grounded when drones invade the area because they can’t see them and they could cause a crash. That delays fighting the fires and that’s horrible when every second counts! Keep your stupid drones out of the restricted areas!
We just had a scare here at our place as a brush fire started in a field over by a Target that’s 1/2 mile from us. Praise God they got it put out before it really took off! We are sitting on edge sitting on go with cat kennels and go bags ready to roll when nessacary. Please keep us in your prayers!
