Magnesium and DMSO for BPH or Prostate Issues

Bottle of Nature's Harvest Magnesium Glycinate 400 mg capsules with some capsules spilled on wooden table

Here’s my latest article over on Don’t Speak Health News on Substack for those who don’t know I’m over there!

This combination has been instrumental in relieving my symptoms over the past month!

Last month I wrote this article about using Magnesium Glycinate for my overall health and then I found how well it helped relieve my BPH symptoms (I’ve made that post free today so everyone can read it). Now I’ve found a combination of magnesium glycinate and DMSO that has been working well and I thought I’d give you all an update!

Here’s some information from the article above on WHY magnesium glycinate works for reduction in BPH symptoms.

Here is why Magnesium glycinate may have helped relieve my enlarged prostate (or BPH) symptoms due to its role in muscle relaxation, reducing inflammation, and balancing calcium levels—all key factors in prostate health.

  • Smooth Muscle RelaxationMagnesium acts as a natural calcium channel blocker, helping relax smooth muscle in the bladder and prostate. This can reduce urinary retention, nocturia (nighttime urination), and frequent urination—common symptoms of BPH.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Chronic inflammation contributes to prostate enlargement. Magnesium inhibits NF-κB, a key transcription factor involved in inflammation, potentially reducing swelling and discomfort.
  • Calcium-Magnesium Balance: A high calcium-to-magnesium ratio is linked to increased BPH risk. Magnesium glycinate helps correct this imbalance, which may support normal prostate function and reduce abnormal tissue growth.
  • Bioavailability & Tolerance: Magnesium glycinate is highly absorbable and gentle on the stomach, making it ideal for long-term use. Its calming effect may also support overall pelvic floor health, which is often involved in BPH-related symptoms.

Several user reports and studies suggest that magnesium supplementation—especially in the glycinate form—can significantly improve urinary symptoms, even in cases of non-bacterial prostatitis or BPH, when used alongside lifestyle changes like pelvic floor exercises. While it may not shrink the prostate dramatically, it can greatly improve quality of life by easing functional symptoms.

DMSO is something I’ve been trying on myself for a couple of years now and I’ve found multiple uses for it in my quest for natural remedies including BPH. Here’s some information about how and why it works for BPH that I put in a different post awhile back.

Potential Mechanisms of Action Relevant to BPH

  • Anti-inflammatory Effects: DMSO possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which may help alleviate symptoms caused by inflammation in the lower urinary tract, including the prostate168. Since inflammation can contribute to urinary symptoms in BPH, reducing inflammation may provide some symptom relief.
  • Pain Reduction: DMSO acts as a counterirritant and can temporarily reduce pain perception, which may help with discomfort sometimes associated with BPH or related conditions6.
  • Improved Drug Delivery: DMSO is known for its ability to enhance the penetration of other medications through biological membranes, including the skin and mucosa8. This property could theoretically improve the effectiveness of other drugs used in combination with DMSO for prostate or bladder conditions.
  • Bladder Relaxation: In bladder instillation therapy, DMSO has been shown to relax the bladder and increase its capacity, which may indirectly benefit patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) similar to those seen in BPH7.

While Saw Palmetto is a good supplement for relieving BPH symptoms I have not found it nearly as effective as adding more magnesium glycinate to my supplement regimen. Here is the kind that I use from NOW products. I also use their brand of Saw Palmetto as it’s combined with pumpkin seed oil, another valuable supplement in its own right but that’s for a different post.

So how do I use DMSO and magnesium glycinate? I’ve tried several different methods of ingestion including foot soaks, combined in a spray bottle (excellent for painful areas) and of course the capsules. I actually use all 3 but I use them for different reasons.

The capsules are what made the difference with my BPH symptoms. I take one in the morning and one in the late afternoon, usually around suppertime. That gives me 400mg per day and that’s where I noticed the biggest difference. When I use my DMSO along with the magnesium capsules I get CONSISTENTLY better flow! I waited for awhile before I wrote this because I wanted to make sure the results stuck and they have!

Now for how I use DMSO effectively to help with my BPH symptoms. I use my 50-50 mixture (half DMSO half distilled water) to start with and I put one full dropper into my tea. You can adjust yours however you need to but this is the recipe I use. I use raw honey in my tea as it helps with the sulfur taste of the DMSO and raw honey is super good for you. Here is the DMSO I use from Amazon.

Well I certainly wasn’t expecting to find this home remedy for BPH symptoms but I’m sure glad I did! Once again I can’t promise you that this will work for you in the same way as we are all different, but the evidence for it to do so is definitely there! I pray that this info finds you well and helps whoever it can! As usual here are the obligatory disclaimers! Until next time blessings to you all!
