At the same time, China’s defense ministry issued a new, rare warning about Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. 

“Action is the most powerful language,” the Chinese Ministry of Defense said, underscoring Beijing’s sensitivity to the Taiwan issue.

In total, China has issued six warnings against US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s possible visit to the island of Taiwan in recent days.

The frequency of Chinese warnings and remarks used by various departments fully demonstrate China’s determination to take the necessary military measures to counter US provocations and safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, Chinese analysts said.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will not tolerate any “Taiwan independence” move or interference from outside forces and will resolutely stop such attempts, Wu Qian, a spokesman for the defense ministry, said at a press conference on Thursday.

The root cause of the turbulent Taiwan Strait is the collusion between the “Taiwan independence” forces and outside interventionist forces, Wu said, urging stakeholders to learn to adapt to the new reality (PLA operations near the Straits) , to reflect on their own actions and “most importantly, to pull back from the brink.”

Although Wu was responding to a question about PLA operations in the Taiwan Strait, analysts interpreted Wu’s words as another stern warning against the US government and some US politicians pushing for a visit by Pelosi to the island of Taiwan .

The U.S. should not underestimate the crisis and the potentially disastrous results it will bring to the Taiwan Straits if Pelosi ends up making the trip, Chinese experts said, adding:

China’s foreign ministry used the phrase “yanzhen yidai” (We are fully prepared for any eventuality) which literally translates to “military forces are ready and waiting for the enemy” and the defense ministry said the PLA “will not sit idly by hands”  if Pelosi visits Taiwan.

Hu Xijin, a columnist for the Global Times, said China’s recent responses, including the two rare expressions, sent a message that Beijing is determined to thwart Pelosi’s plan to visit the island of Taiwan.

Hu cited some precedents where the two phrases were used:

Before the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-53), then-premier Zhou Enlai warned that China would not stand idly by if US troops crossed the 38th parallel.

In 1964, the Chinese government warned the US after the Gulf of Tonkin incident using the same phrase, urging the US to stop advancing on the then Democratic People’s Republic of Vietnam.

The phrase “yanzhen yidai”, which the foreign ministry translated as “full preparation for any eventuality”, suggests that the preparation is not a military mobilization or logistical preparation, but that all personnel are in place and all ammunition is ready for a potential conflict, according to Hu.

Lü Xiang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times “since the status quo has already been broken by the US due to Pelosi’s visit, China will actively shape a new status quo.”

China will make the best use of the US’s mistakes through comprehensive measures, including military, looking to fully control the situation in the Taiwan Strait to better promote the reunification process in the future, the expert said.
